Crafts For Kids: The Ultimate Cloud Dough Recipe

The creativity and energy level of kids is wonderful, but it sure can be hard to keep up with their fast pace! Sometimes kids stay entertained with a new activity or toy for days on end, but other times it can seem like they need something new every couple of minutes! This fun, quick, and easy cloud dough recipe is an awesome activity to do with your kiddos. Along with the excitement of making and playing with the cloud dough, kids will love the quality time spent learning and creating with their role model!

This cloud dough recipe is awesome because it only consists of a couple of safe ingredients, it does not require any cooking, and it only takes about five minutes to make! The end result is a super soft dough that can be warped, twisted, rolled, and squished into whatever comes to a kid’s imagination. Besides encouraging imagination, cloud dough also improves childrens’ motor skills (because of the pulling, pinching, rolling, poking, etc.).

The Cloud Dough Recipe

As previously mentioned, this is a no-cook cloud dough recipe! It only takes five minutes to throw together, and it provides a great opportunity to teach kids how to measure ingredients.

  • 1 cup of cornstarch
  • ½ cup of lotion of your choice. It can be regular lotion or baby lotion, and scented or unscented.
  • Optional: Food coloring

  1. Put ½ cup of lotion in a medium-sized bowl.
  2. Optional: add food coloring to the lotion and mix until they are well-blended. If the concentrated gel is being used, then only 1-2 drops are needed. If using regular food coloring, more than 2 drops may be needed.
  3. Add 1 cup of cornstarch and mix together with the lotion until combined.
  4. Take the cloud dough out of the bowl and place it on some wax paper. Begin kneading until it forms a pliable, dough-like consistency. Add another tablespoon of cornstarch if the dough is too sticky, or add lotion if it is too dry. Tip: wear gloves to prevent hands from getting stained.
  5. Repeat the recipe for each color you would like!

After completing the cloud dough recipe, it’s time to use your imagination. Grab the rolling pin, cookie cutters, toy dinosaurs, and anything else you need to create whatever comes to mind!

How To Store Cloud Dough

It is important to store the cloud dough as airtight as possible to ensure that it lasts a long time. Wrap each chunk of cloud dough in plastic wrap before placing it in an airtight container or Ziplock baggie. This will help keep the dough soft, and prevent it from drying out. If it does become dry, knead extra lotion in to restore its softness.

How To Keep The Cloud Dough Soft

Do not leave the cloud dough exposed for too long, or else it will harden. Airtight storage is key! Revive hardened cloud dough by kneading in a pump or two of lotion.

How To Fix Cloud Dough Consistency

If the cloud dough is too wet and sticky, add more cornstarch one tablespoon at a time. If the cloud dough is too hard and dry, add a little bit more lotion. Remember, altitude and humidity varies by locality, so the recipe can be slightly altered to match your climate!

How Long Will Cloud Dough Last?

The lifespan of cloud dough largely depends on how it is stored. The less air that can get to it, the longer it will last. The lotion will begin to dry out after roughly a week, but more lotion can be added to make it seem brand new again. If adding lotion becomes ineffective, then it is time to make more! Thankfully this cloud dough recipe is quick and easy.
