Learning how to get motivated doesn’t come naturally.
Is it getting harder to wake up in the morning because you automatically wake up drained with your ever-growing to-do list? You are not alone. That feeling of exhaustion may not just be fatigue, but also be loss of motivation. Simply put, motivation is the underlying reason, desire, or willingness to engage in certain conduct.
Our motivations are to improve ourselves, our families, and our living environment. However, through distractions and unexpected setbacks, we can easily become overwhelmed with discouragement and anxiety, which causes us to lose sight of our motivation of why we have the goals we have and work hard to reach those goals. If you notice you are starting to lose motivation, engage in the following practices to get back on track.
Don’t Fear Failure
In fact, remove that word from your vocabulary. There are no failures in life; there are only successes and learning opportunities. With each opportunity, whether a success or not, ask yourself what you learned from it. An opportunity that did not work out as anticipated should be viewed as an opportunity to redefine your methods and techniques as necessary to continue to pursue your goals. Looking at your failures as opportunities is the first step of learning how to get motivated.

Start small and slow

Waking up to an ever-ending to-do list that you likely added to in your sleep is enough to give you a headache as soon as you wake up. Rather than immediately jumping full speed ahead into big projects, start your day flow slow and steady, knocking out the little tasks and work your way to the bigger projects. This ensures your energy has been distributed appropriately, rather than exhausted on smaller scaled tasks.
Write down your goals and underlying motivation as to why you want to achieve them.
Keeping this mounted or taped to your mirror, wall, or any area where you will see it on a daily basis. When you start to lose motivation, looking at your goals and how to get motivated will serve as a quick reminder to stay focused.
Don’t compare yourself to other people.
Theodore Roosevelt once said that “Comparison is the thief of joy.” There will always be someone better than you and someone ahead of you. Constantly comparing yourself to others gives life to many self-doubts, anxiety, depression, and is a strong contributor to low self-esteem. Focus on your talents, gifts, dreams, goals, and ideas. Make sure you stay in the race to achieve all that you set out to do. Focus on becoming the best version of yourself not only for yourself but for your underlying motivating reasons. Review your past results and remind yourself of your past victories. From that, you will be able to know how to get motivated and maintain that motivation.
We all have moments where we lose sight of the light at the end of the tunnel. “How to get motivated” isn’t hard if you keep fighting for your goals, and remind yourself of why you are getting in the fight in the first place.
